Comprehensive Eye Exam
A comprehensive eye exam includes a glasses prescription but is more than just that. First, we work with you to find the best glasses prescription to fit your lifestyle, then move on to check the health of the front and back of your eyes.
Looking inside your eyes can reveal a lot about the overall health of your body. The eye health part of the exam can show us things like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, auto immune disorders, cancer or tumors in addition to revealing eye diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration, or retinal tears and detachments.
For low risk children the American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends:
The first eye exam between the ages of 6 to 12 months old
A second eye exam between 3 to 5 years old
Then for kids 6 through 17 years old, an exam before first grade and annually thereafter
For at-risk children annually or more frequent exams are recommended based on specific conditions
For low risk Adults the AOA recommends:
At least every two years for 18 through 64 years old
Annually for 65 years and older
For at risk adults annually or more frequent exams are recommended based on specific conditions. This includes but not limited to a family history of ocular disease, systemic health conditions, certain systemic prescription medications, or wearing contact lenses
